The Humbert Swallowing Training Program presented Jumpstart as a way to step beyond traditional SLP graduate training through hands-on, immersive Modified Barium Swallow education. The source page noted that more than half of practicing SLPs in the United States reported feeling neither prepared nor confident in providing dysphagia services after graduation.
Jumpstart was a hybrid MBS Intensive offered in person for three days and virtually through lifetime access to eight hours of recorded online content. The in-person training took place at Swallowing Wellness, 4641 Montgomery Avenue, Suite 300, Bethesda, Maryland 20814.

Friday
Introduction to medical SLP, swallowing anatomy and physiology, essentials of swallowing diagnostics, asking the right questions, critical thinking in dysphagia diagnostics, and creating a physiology-based mental flow chart.
Saturday
Finding the why in swallowing diagnostics through case studies and spontaneous decisions, followed by standardized-patient clinical scenarios involving CSE, MBS, differential diagnosis, patient education, and counseling.
Sunday
Personalized MBS training with volunteer patients under Dr. Humbert’s mentorship, including firsthand experience, direct mentorship, initial impressions, and recommendations.
Lifetime access
MBS analysis that de-centers aspiration and residue while prioritizing physiology; coherent documentation and report-writing; and mock care-planning presentations emphasizing team communication, patient and caregiver advocacy, and countering misinformation.

Ianessa Humbert, Ph.D., SLP is a world-renowned scientist, researcher, educator, and highly sought-after speaker with expertise in swallowing and swallowing disorders. With more than 400 speaking invitations around the world, she is known for forcing clinicians to think critically about what they do. Her teaching philosophy requires attendees to question everything they think they know before learning can begin. She co-created Down the Hatch, co-founded STEP, and is CEO of Swallowing Wellness.
Natalie A. Ottey, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a Professor at the University of the District of Columbia and Coordinator of the UDC Simulation, Teaching and Research Lab in the Speech-Language Pathology Program in Washington, DC. With more than 20 years of teaching, she specializes in best practices in simulation for dysphagia training. Her hands-on, real-world teaching approaches have advanced student preparedness in serving people with swallowing disorders.

The original course cost was $1,000 and was listed for 3.0 CEUs. Swallowing Wellness offered payment plans for in-person courses: participants could request the dollar amounts and payment dates that suited them, received a separate invoice for each payment, and had to pay the full registration cost before the course start date.
