SLP Interrupted

Current medical speech-language pathology practices are shaped by three forces that “pre-program” how clinicians approach patient care: the healthcare system, clinical training, and each clinician’s view of themself as a person.

SLP Interrupted is a counter-cultural discussion designed to challenge these norms and redefine the culture of care. Its goal is to interrupt regularly scheduled SLP programming with an emergency broadcast message urging clinicians to change the paradigm of SLP culture and rethink how success, care, and professionalism are defined.

At the heart of the disruption is a simple truth: self-preservation, by both clinicians and institutions, is a leading cause of poor patient care.

The podcast and workshop are for clinicians ready to reflect, be challenged, and challenge the status quo—people committed to transforming their practice and the profession.

Dr. Humbert, Ph.D., SLP is a world-renowned scientist, speaker, professor, advocate, business owner, and expert in swallowing disorders. She has dedicated 25 years to restoring humanity in healthcare and emphasizing courageous common sense in clinician training. Her research roles have included the National Institutes of Health, University of Wisconsin–Madison, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and University of Florida. She co-founded STEP and co-hosted Down the Hatch and Evidence and Argument.

Ed Bice, M.Ed., CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist and Clinical Consultant for IOPI Medical, LLC. He has extensive dysphagia experience across acute care, outpatient, home health, and skilled nursing, as well as leadership experience as a Regional Manager, Vice President of Clinical Services, and Chief Operating Officer. He has been an invited speaker for universities and national and state conventions.
