Coughing during meals
Coughing during or after a meal is worth noticing, but one cough cannot tell you exactly what happened.

What it can look like
A cough right after a sip. Clearing your throat all through dinner. A wet or gurgly voice after you swallow. Whatever the pattern, your body is speaking up.
What a cough can mean
Swallowing and breathing share a crossroads in your throat. A cough can be a response when food or drink approaches the airway, but coughing can also have other causes. The pattern, your health history, and testing all matter.
One important catch
Food or liquid entering the airway can contribute to lung complications. Some people do not cough when this happens, while other people cough for reasons unrelated to aspiration. Symptoms alone cannot confirm what occurred.
How we can help
When appropriate, an X-ray study or camera study lets us watch swallowing directly. We use your history and test findings to build an individualized plan. Please do not start thickening drinks on your own; ask your swallowing or medical team what assessment is appropriate.
