When swallowing hurts
Pain with swallowing is different from food feeling stuck. It deserves attention sooner.

What it can feel like
Sharp, burning, or aching pain when you swallow — high in the throat or behind the breastbone. Sometimes only certain things set it off, like very hot drinks or crusty bread.
Common reasons
An irritated or infected throat or food pipe. Stomach acid burning the lining. A scratch from something sharp. Some medicines can irritate the food pipe if they sit too long. Most causes are treatable.
Do not wait it out
A sore throat with a cold fades in days. Pain that lasts past two weeks, stops you from drinking, or comes with fever or weight loss is different — it is time to be looked at.
How we can help
Pain often needs a team. We check how your swallow is moving, and when the cause needs an ear-nose-throat or stomach specialist, we get you there and share what we found. You should not have to organize your own care.
