What does an SLP do for swallowing?
Speech-language pathologists are the specialists who evaluate and treat swallowing.
What is an SLP?
A speech-language pathologist (SLP) is a licensed specialist in communication and swallowing. SLPs who focus on dysphagia have advanced training in how the swallow works — and why it goes wrong.
How they evaluate
SLPs often perform the clinical swallowing evaluation and may conduct instrumental studies. A swallowing X-ray (MBSS) is commonly completed with radiology team members; a camera study (FEES) can be completed by a trained clinician. Care is often interprofessional.
How they treat
They design your therapy program: exercises to strengthen the swallow, strategies fitted to you, texture recommendations, and education for you and your family.
Finding the right one
Ask your doctor for a referral to an SLP who specializes in swallowing, or search the ASHA ProFind directory. Look for dysphagia experience and access to MBSS or FEES testing — both are done here at Swallowing Wellness.
