Welcome to the SWIG Podcast!

The Swallowing Wellness Information Group (SWIG) Podcast is a refreshing new take on eating and drinking, providing easy-to-ingest knowledge about feeding and swallowing, while proposing somewhat difficult-to-digest truths about what humanity wants versus what the healthcare system offers. Dr. Humbert is a world-renowned swallowologist, advocate for people with feeding and swallowing difficulty, speech-language pathologist, scientist, professor, entrepreneur, and trouble maker. If you give her up to 30 minutes of your attention, she promises to provide some of the most educational and useful knowledge you never knew you needed.

Episode 1.

Play Dice

In Episode 1, Dr. Humbert uses the Dice Experiment to explore why medical professionals in health care, especially speech language pathologists (SLPs), seem to make casual recommendations to restrict food and drink, thicken liquids, and even worse, give strict instructions to eat nothing by mouth - even though they likely wouldn’t recommend it for themselves. Dr. Humbert contemplates:

1.    The SLP fix-it culture and how SLPs got control of mealtimes

2.    Medical professionals’ stance on getting a taste of their own medicine

3.    What patients think about it.

Episode 2.

N.I.C.E. - Navigate. Influence. Communicate. Empower.

SLPs often say that they don’t feel respected or heard, and that they are not given the tools needed to do their jobs. Some have asked why SLPs still feel this way when the demographic makeup of the profession is more homogeneous than just about any other profession (~90% white female). This assumes that SLP homgeneity should yield more “like-minded” thinking when challenged to re-brand, problem-solve, and advance the field. This SWIG podcast episode is about SLP stereotypes and SLP nice culture, and their impact on the disciplines’ inability to pivot. With contributions from Vanessa Galeano, Amy Shipley, Brooke Richardson, Meredith Harold Poole and several anonymous SLP contributors, Dr. Humbert examines the overlooked undercurrent of perception within and about the profession.
